Recently, four GATE CITY participants (Sarah Bucken, Neeta Masand, Bari Sherman, and Lorna Spargo) attended The WIDA Winter Academy. Although this wasn’t affiliated directly with GATE CITY, we thought it would be valuable information to share. That way, if you have WIDA questions, you know whose brains from the cohort to pick!
According to Sarah, who says she learned a great deal, “the time was focused on familiarizing the participants with the WIDA ELD Standards and then guiding us in applying those principles as we created specific units in our content areas.” She is excited to start doing some thinking and working around teaching an ELL specific writing class, which she says, “would undoubtedly stretch me but would also be the exact kind of class I would want to teach. Even if the new class does not materialize, I much more prepared to scaffold assignments that are appropriate across the ELL levels.”
